UMPIRE INFORMATION = IMPORTANT!

Umpire Equipment & Uniform
  • Each Umpire is expected to carry their Baseball Ontario Certification with them at all times and have the appropriate crest affixed to the left breast of their shirt or on their cap
  • Each Umpire is expected to wear a blue shirt (provided) and dark/gray pants (clean jeans are acceptable)
  • Umpires are expected to wear their Umpire cap at all games
  • Each Umpire is expected to wear the appropriate protective athletic support
  • Plate Umpires (other than Rookie Ball) are expected to wear a mask, chest protector and leg guards all of which should be worn under your clothing
  • Plate Umpire equipment is stored at all diamonds and is available for your use
  • Please wear an undershirt and dry all equipment when you are finished with it
  • Your Umpire shirt and cap must be returned to Larry Goetz at the end of the season

Getting Started
  • You should be at the park and ready to go 15 minutes BEFORE game time
  • Start times vary by Division so please check your Schedule closely
  • Some Divisions have a curfew, so you will need to check with the Coaches to confirm the curfew time (if any)
  • It is important that games start on time so all infield practice must end at least 5 minutes before game time
  • Remember, the next inning starts at the time of the last out in the previous inning

Ground Rules
The Plate Umpire is expected to give the appropriate Ground Rules for the diamond and should cover the following:.

  • Out of Play areas -- including any openings in the fences
  • Curfew (if applicable)
  • “No inning will start after ???”
  • Remember, the next inning starts at the time of the last out in the previous inning
  • Jewelry (No visible jewelry) except Medic Alert bracelets/chains
  • See OBA “Jewelry” Rule -- NO visible jewelry is permitted. Visible jewelry must be removed, not simply taped over. Medic Alert identification is not to be considered jewelry under this Rule. If a pitcher is wearing a Medic Alert bracelet on the pitching wrist, it is to be moved to the non-pitching wrist if possible.
  • See CSL “Jewelry” Rule -- ALL jewelry, except for Medic Alert bracelets/necklaces must be removed. Medic Alert jewelry must be taped.
  • Warm-up Pitches (5 pitches or 1 minute -- and make sure you enforce it)
  • Substitute runner for the catcher with 2 out
  • Other?

Rain Delays
  • If rain causes the cancellation of a game you will be contacted directly by Cory Goetz
  • If you arrive at the park, consult with the respective Coaches about whether to begin or continue the game
  • If a game starts, you will be paid regardless of the weather
  • If a game cannot start, you won’t be paid but you will work the rescheduled game or work an equivalent game
  • At the first sign of lightening, play will stop and all players and Umpires MUST leave the field

Can't Make a Game/Miss a Game?
  • If you are unable to make a game that you are scheduled for, please call Cory Goetz (652-5936) as soon as you receive your Schedule
  • You should give a minimum of 48hrs notice to Cory Goetz if you are unable to make a game
  • If you need to cancel at the last minute (because of an emergency), please call Cory Goetz (652-5936)
  • Failure to call could result in a Games pay fine or other penalty
  • Do not make arrangements for your own replacement Umpire
  • If your partner doesn’t show up for a game, consult with the respective Coaches and make appropriate arrangements (ie: Recruit a capable parent)
  • DO NOT attempt to work a game by yourself

Assignments
  • Saturday, April 21, 2008 (9 am to 4 pm) - Level 1-2 Certification
  • Saturday, May TBA, 2008 (11 am to 12 pm) - Uniform Distribution, Procedures & Scheduling, Divisional Rules, Umpire Signals, Calling Balls & Strikes and Fair/Foul
  • Saturday, June TBA, 2008 (11 am to 12 pm) - Softball Rule Differences and Pitching
  • Saturday, July TBA, 2008 (11 am to 12 pm) - Rules (Ball batted, pitched or thrown out of play; Interference, Obstruction)
  • Saturday, July TBA, 2008 (11 am to 12 pm) - Rules (Fly Ball Outs, Infield Fly, Dealing with Parents/Coaches, When does a run score?)
  • Each meeting will take approximately 1 hour and that in addition to receiving your assignment we will discuss any Rules situation that you have had in the past month...

Umpire Fees
  • Rookie = $20.00
  • Mite, Squirt, Novice & Mosquito Boys = $20.00 plate/$17.00 Bases
  • PeeWee Boys and Bantam Girls = $25.00 plate/$20.00 Bases
  • Bantam Boys and Midget Girls = $35.00 plate/$30.00 Bases
  • Midget Boys, Jr. Juv Girls and Jr. Juvenile Boys = $40.00 plate/$30.00 Bases
  • You will be paid the 2nd Saturday of each month (although the 1st pay day will be Tuesday, June 3rd)... and the next will be Saturday, June 14.
  • You can receive your pay at any of the Scheduled Meetings or at Larry’s house from 11 am to 12 pm on non-meeting Saturday mornings

Pay Days are as Follows:
  • Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 (Note the date)
  • Saturday, June 14th, 2008
  • Saturday, July 12th, 2008
  • Saturday, August 9th, 2008
  • Saturday, August 30th, 2008
  • All Umpires (under age 20) who attend a Saturday morning meeting (and who bring their Rule Books -- the one you've been given), will receive a $10 bonus!

Game Cards
  • If you work a Competitive Minor Mosquito and/or Minor Peewee Game, you will be required to receive and review an Official Game Card before each game
  • The game card must be signed by the Home team Manager AFTER the game
